SWM Kickers Tryout Details & Procedures

Tryouts for SWM SC Kickers teams are conducted to identify players with the aptitude, technical skill, and physical characteristics necessary to compete at various levels. The SWM Director of Coaching (DOC) will establish the criteria for evaluation during tryouts.

Before the tryouts, the DOC will provide guidance to all coaches regarding the criteria to be assessed and the overall process. The evaluation criteria will include athletic, soccer skills, small-sided games and scrimmages.  Goalkeepers will be evaluated using separate criteria tailored to their position, distinct from the criteria for field players.

Coaches are responsible for leading the tryout sessions and making team selections with guidance from the DOC and Director of Player Development (DPD).

Coaches may be expected to assist with tryouts for the same age group but of the opposite gender.

The DOC will list returning SWM Kickers coaches and new candidates by May 1st. At its May meeting, the SWM SC Board will review and confirm the coaching lineup, as well as assist in filling any coaching vacancies. Depending on tryouts, additional coaches may need to be identified.

Tryout results will be strictly confidential.

All players are expected to try out for their age-appropriate team based on birth or school year as outlined by the club with guidance from MSYSA and US Soccer.

Parents, who are not team coaches, are not allowed on the soccer fields during tryouts. To maintain fairness, volunteers who are not parents of players in the tryouts may be used to assist the coach, for data recording, and other logistical tasks.
